5 Essential Sites for Anime & Manga Lovers

The online anime/manga community is enormous and still growing. The sheer number of news sites, download sites, video sites, and even series-specific fan sites online can make your head spin.

So here's a list of the top 5 anime/manga websites that I've personally found useful. Hopefully, they can help you on your Internet journey as an anime/manga fan.

1. Anime News Network
The Anime News Network, or ANN, is an anime news resource. The writers for the website translate from Japanese news sources, and you can find accurate English-language articles being posted usually on the same day as the original source. They are FAST and they are RELIABLE. If you want to know the latest developments on the anime/manga scene, be sure to check out this site.

2. Baka-Updates and Baka-Updates Manga

Unless you understand Japanese, to watch or read anime and manga, you have to rely on fan-subs and scanlations (i.e. translations done by fan groups). Baka-Updates and its spin-off Baka-Updates Manga are places where you can track the latest releases of subs and scanlations. These two websites are NOT download sites, but since they provide links to the fan groups that made the releases, you can get to the download links easily enough. You can also find recruitment information for different projects if you go to the forums.

3. MyAnimeList
This website is a database for pretty much every anime and manga series known to the English-language audience. Here, you can find reviews and ratings for different series, as well as user recommendations. The user recs are extremely helpful for finding new series to watch/read. If you register on the site, you can also keep a record of all the anime and manga that you have ever watched/read.

4. MangaHelpers
This is an online community for manga fans as well as aspiring translators and scanlators. The site used to be a place where you could also read manga, but due to copyright issues, all the series have been removed. Their forums are still a pretty cool place to hang around. The translations on the site allows you to keep up with series that have either not been scanlated  or is lagging behind the Japanese releases. Also, if you are at all interested in becoming a part of a scanlation group, be sure to check out the site's tutorials as well as recruitment threads.

5. Crunchyroll
There are a lot of places to watch anime online, but Crunchyroll is a website where you can watch anime legally, without having to worry about trampling over copyrights. The site didn't start out this way, but over the years, they managed to secure legal distribution agreements for many anime series. With their free account, the titles you can watch is rather limited, but still quite good. For a relatively reasonable monthly fee, you can watch all of their anime titles, and the episodes are released the same day as the Japanese broadcast (with no ads).

These are the best anime/manga sites in my opinion but there are many more site out there that might be better. Do you have a wesbite recommendation? If so, comment below to let everyone know!
